Sony a6000 Newbie

I just switched to Sony from a Nikon point and shoot. I have to say that their app is much better than this 1. When I connect my camera to the app from my phone, I dont even see the option to use my phone as a remote to the camera. Also, every time it says to "scan the QR Code", I get a popup that says the QR code for my camera isnt supported.

Not great

A hassle to use. Cant shoot RAW remotely. Used it once and havent used it again.

I agree

that the app needs better instructions for beginners. You should be able to select what camera you have and it could walk you through everything. That being said the app works pretty dang well once you get it set up. Deserves more than the 2 stars it has.

Great!!! Works well with my a7rII!

For those having trouble, you must first download the app in your camera. You will need to create an account on your PC and login on your cameras Application List settings. Sync the camera with "Sync to Smartphone." A QR code will appear. Use that with this app. Certificates will install, just accept. This app is great. Especially the touch focus. I mostly do long exposure so this is a life saver. Great for group shots. All you need is a tripod. All your settings wont transfer over to the camera app, so you will have to re-enter them. IT SHOOTS RAW!! You just need to set it up again.

No GPS support

GPS option has been disappeared.

Great

Really easy to transfer photos. Photos are automatically copied to the camera roll. Love it.

Easy to use

It was easy to set it up and use it

Great!!

Works perfectly with my new Sony a6300!!

You have to be kidding me

What a piece of junk. Yes, you can connect to the camera (Sony RX-100 II in my case). Yes you can capture an image to your phone (but the phone has a camera and can do that out of the box). What you cannot do is set up the camera with a manual exposure (say, on a tripod for a night shot) and trigger the shutter. When you use this app, the camera is in some auto exposure mode. I do not care which, I need manual. This app is a cheap toy. It is not up to the standards of the RX-100 II camera.

Good for what it is advertised

I just purchased a Sony a6300 and tried pairing it with the app and it was a little difficult but finally figured it out. Transferring files can be slow but i am not sure if it can be made faster. I wish Sony could work on this app because it would be really much better if they added maybe some editing features including filters. A way to delete pictures in the app would be great and an option where if you import pictures from the camera, you can delete them from the camera after they all import to the phone. Overall not a bad app if it were faster, had a delete option and an Instagram share option directly.

Review from A7sii User

Sony Playmemories mobile app lacks the proper and full-functionality of it’s competitors prosumer grade software. Beyond viewing occasional images or remote viewing, the software is simply lackluster. First off, the app does not mirror the interface of the the camera, thereby losing all custom settings set by the end-user. Also, it seemingly disorients the user by disallowing any custom buttons, and full-access to menu functions, such as custom audio or picture profile (s-log) control. On top of that the video stream lags possibly about .5 second, and often cuts out disabling use of both the camera and mobile device. I’ve contacted Sony Playmemories Team multiple times over the past two months with no response, it seems this app is dead in the water to them. In order to improve the app, I would suggest the following: 1) Mirror the exact display of the Camera (like Panasonic) 2) Retain all consumer customization (do not emulate the menu system) 3) Add additional functionality, such as Touch-Focus for Video 4) Create Prosumer quality UI & Controls (Custom Zoom Settings, Manuel Focus with Remote Control) 5) Enable streaming directly to SmartTVs and Computers. These are just a few suggestions that I hope the Sony Team takes into consideration. I own and A7sii.

Does Not Work

The app refuses to recognize the QR code on my a6000. I first tried with my iPad, then my iPhone 6s Plus. I used an external light, thinking the light level was too low. I even put the iPhone on a tripod, with the camera resting on a table, to remove vibration. Nope. Delete.

Terrible app

I cant believe how a big company like Sony can put such a lazy app out. Its slow old and no QR codes can be found on the RX100 or A7 camera. It takes too long to do anything in the app. iPhone 6s

Reliable, useful

Complaints and demands from some of these reviews are unreasonable. I use it all the time and its easy to connect on my camcorders, AX100 and CX455. Setup on A7ii took a little thinking. Newest version has exposure compensation. Great feature. A7ii doesnt have a flip-out screen, so this app makes it easy to monitor myself when standing in front of the camera. Also, has mirror mode. Great app.

Wont be using this app

Way way way too many limitations. I would say only about 10% of the functions of my camera are available when using this app. It also takes way too long setting it up every time you want to use it and youre also not able to review your videos- EVEN on the camera itself. So if youre doing videos- this is completely useless.

Help!

My a6000 was connecting with my iPhone 6s Plus perfectly before I installed the IOS 9.3 update. Now the camera does connect at all. My phone finds the Sony wifi address and connects, but the camera doesnt connect to the app. Im so annoyed, it used to work so easily before!

Ok but should geo tag and user manual under clear

After experimenting a bit was able wirelessly transfer photos from Sony RX100 to I Phone--- 8 times in a row. (Trick is to select transfer on camera, then go to (previously WiFi paired)I Phone settings, then as soon as wifi connection appears established on I Phone go immediately to Play Memories to complete transfer) Transfer itself was as quick as transferring on a desktop! User manual did not show all the steps. Remote control feature wont work on rx100 and I phone. No geo tag feature (unlike Olympus and Canon)

App needs work

App is not updated to support iOS 9.3

Doesnt work on iPad with DSC-HX400V

Try to upload photos to iPad Air from DSC-HX400V, iPad recognizes camera but camera never connects. Uninstalled.

Cool idea horrible execution

I love these apps for cameras now adays. But this one seems to focus more on beaming and watching photos already taken. When shooting with the app it has extremely limited functions. Everything but the basic exposure controls are diabled. Picture Profiles, punch-in - all disabled. Ultimately it really makes this app completely useless for film makers who need a wireless control system. Panasonic makes a wonderful version of this app that includes all the cameras functions. It boggles my mind that sony left them all out for some odd reason. Sony please fix this app to include all the cameras controls! Otherwise, i cant use it :(
